“Between” is a photographic series of lyrical and poetic photographs taken at twilight and at nighttime.
The landscape photographs are taken at twilight or at late night often in low light. Frequently, it is hard to know what is being seen, since the image slowly reveals itself from the surrounding dark, so I stand next to the camera and feel when to take the picture.
Rarely are the images composed using the camera’s viewfinder (although they appear fluid, unplanned). Using only ambient or available light, these digital photographs are made instinctively without really knowing what is in the picture frame.
Influences include: the cinema of Rainer Fassbinder, Michelangelo Antonioni, Ingmar Bergman; renaissance and Nineteenth Century/Hudson River painting; the diaristic literature of Goethe, Dostoevsky, Kafka. The movies my father, who worked at a motion picture company, would bring home during my childhood and play in our darkened basement were also influential.
