The Museum of Modern Art is currently seeking an experienced Project Collections Photographer to create publication quality digital images of 2-and 3- dimensional works in the Museum’s Prints and Illustrated Books collection including large installation works and complex objects. This grant funded project is expected to last 1 year, with the possibility of a 1 year extension.
Working within the Museum’s Department of Imaging Services and reporting to the Studio Manager, the Project Collections Photographer:
– Uses a copy stand fitted with specialized imaging equipment as well as tripod and stand mounted cameras to create image files suitable for the highest levels of offset reproduction as well as e-publishing, kiosk, web, and other uses
– Works in accordance with Museum and international archival imaging standards including those for color management and metadata
– Uses all relevant Photoshop software tools and regularly provides color correction on an individual basis to match hue, saturation, lightness, and contrast of image files to original works
– Ensures the welfare of artwork throughout the imaging procedure
– Participates in curatorial meetings along with the Studio Production Manager to determine the most effective photographic approach toward meeting project goals
Qualified candidates will possess a BA, BS, or BFA in Photography and 3 years’ professional digital photographic experience including studio work or equivalent. Minimum 2 years’ experience imaging fine art or other cultural heritage objects. Solid working knowledge and refined technical skill in high resolution digital imaging procedures, equipment, and lighting for imaging of 2-D and 3-D art objects. Ability to use both small and large format studio cameras, including expertise in view camera technique and controlled photographic lighting. Demonstrated skill at rendering essential esthetic elements of works of art as they translate to photographic images. Good understanding of major artists and movements of modern and contemporary art history. Proficiency in Photoshop and solid working knowledge of the Macintosh operating system are essential. Excellent color judgment, facility at making one’s own color corrections, and a high level of organizational and teamwork skills are required.
