I’m pleased to give an artist talk about my recent fine art photographs at the MoMA PS1 Rockaway VW Dome 2.

Sponsored by the Rockaway Artists Alliance, the artist talk takes place on Monday, June 10, at 7:30pm at 94th Street and Shore Front Parkway, Rockaway, Queens,New York.

The talk will be casual, and I’ll be bringing more than a dozen actual prints to the event.  Most of these photographs are taken without looking through the camera’s viewfinder and are created at sunset, sunrise or in the middle of the night.

Some of the photographs include the rugged, breathtaking coast of remote Newfoundland, Canada, in moonlight; an eerie Beijing Park at dawn; or the clouds reflecting in the Delaware river.  I traveled extensively to many different locations to make this body of work, and include the coast of Newfoundland; Beijing, China; Manitoba, Canada; rural Pennsylvania; upstate New York; and Rome,  Italy.

For me, working at night is mysterious: I love how the landscape slowly reveals itself from the surrounding dark.  Often I don’t really know what is being captured, so I just stand next to the camera, intuitively point it and take the picture. Later, I see what I photographed.

Amazingly, I used to photograph extensively in Rockaway while studying for my MFA from Yale University years ago, so I’m so glad to be invited by my dear friend and organizer of the talk, Sophia Skeans, who is also the treasurer of the Rockaway Artists Alliance.

Its also exciting to give the talk in the temporary events space created by MoMA PS1 in response to hurricane Sandy’s devastating impact in Rockaway.  As part of EXPO 1: New York, MoMA PS1, and in partnership with Volkswagen, a a temporary geodesic dome was constructed that serves as a center for culture, education, and community in the Rockaways. The flexible space is a venue for lectures and conversations, rotating art exhibitions, film and video screenings, performances, and community events, such for as my talk.

The VW Dome 2 is on view from March 29 until June 30. It is located at the southern end of the parking lot located between Beach 94 and Beach 95 Streets, close to the former boardwalk.

Rockaway Artists Alliance is a not-for-profit community arts organization formed in 1994, with a mission to encourage and engage residents of Rockaway, and provide free lectures, exhibits and special events.

Perhaps you can make the trek Monday night!
