Chelsea Contemporary Fine Art Openings

Many art openings with well known names be-felled Chelsea this evening among them Tracey Emin at Lehmann Maupin, Tim Hawkinson at Pace, Alexi Worth at DC Moore and a slew of others.

Richard Misrach at Pace Gallery

Amazingly, these were taken from a hotel balcony in Hawaii.   Some of the figures, a somewhat new element in Misrach’s landscape photographs, have faces obscured and rest centered, alone, in a huge expanse of beach or sea.  The immense photographs of waves, too, imply and embody an overwhelming vastness, and seem to relate to Nineteenth Century landscape paintings.

Sandi Haber Fifield at Rick Wester Fine Art

Sandi Haber Fifield pulls off the difficult in  After the Threshold, her new photography show at the newly located Rick Wester Fine Art, by creating a composite structure of three or four images sequenced in a narrative to be “read” as one photograph.  In Sandi’s show, which I think is an exciting standout, the 16 photographs as well as a new video describe a fractured sense of place or landscape that  come together to make an essential feeling or thought.
