Thanks to everyone who braced the rain and attended my artist/photography talk at the MoMA PS1 Rockaway VW Dome 2 sponsored by the Rockaway Artists Alliance. Driving over the Crossbay bridge through the fog and storm was a magical reminder of what “Rock,” as its know to the locals, is all about.
Although the geodesic dome was on the dark site (and I was under the weather myself), I decided to lay about a dozen prints on a table which made for an intimate gathering. Most of the photographs were taken without looking through the camera’s viewfinder and are created at sunset or in the middle of the night.
Amazingly, I used to photograph extensively in Rockaway while studying for my MFA from Yale University years ago, so I’m so glad to be invited by my dear friend and organizer of the talk, Sophia Skeans, who is on the board of the Rockaway Artists Alliance.
The VW Dome 2 is open June 30. It is located at the southern end of the parking lot located between Beach 94 and Beach 95 Streets, close to the former boardwalk.
Look out for other Rockaway Artists Alliance free lectures, exhibits and special events.
